All of our Seasonal Events can trace their roots back to the day when the pastor of Park Valley Church in Haymarket, VA asked the Small Group leaders to organize what was called a “Forty Days of Purpose” community service project. The leaders of one group decided to visit our recovering service members at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in December of 2006. The purpose of the visit was to provide a “taste of home” Christmas celebration for the Warriors, many of which had no family in the area. This experience ignited a passion in the hearts of the group leaders who decided to continue with this event and summer cookouts at military hospitals in the National Capital Region. These same group leaders became the co-founders of Serve Our Willing Warriors in 2013.
As a way of delivering the “taste of home” experience to the Warriors and their families in a true home-like environment, the Warrior Retreat at Bull Run was established on July 4, 2015. Beyond the six-day stays provided, we have created several other events at the Retreat in the spirit of the seasons. These include: home cooked, Thanksgiving dinners; Christmas tree lighting celebrations with festivities, snacks and deserts; Community Appreciation days, BBQs and other Patriotic Day celebrations, all of which include Warriors, their families, and our members and volunteers.
Our special events provide information to the Warriors regarding the opportunity to stay at our Retreat and are great sources for guest bookings.
