SOWW Chef Hits Milestone
On January 28th SOWW volunteer Executive Event Chef Ken Gardner hit an amazing milestone when he prepared his 25th meal for the Retreat. Chef Ken is the Chef/Owner of KB Culinary, a catering firm based in Washington, VA. For two years, Chef Ken has held the position of Executive Event Chef here at SOWW. He has created menus and prepared meals for every large event at the retreat and many Sunday night dinners for the Warrior’s and their families. He handles all the food for Mighty Oaks graduations, BBQs at Walter Reed and Fort Belvoir, and the Home Away from Home dinners the weekend before Thanksgiving. On Home Away from Home weekend, he stays up all night to cook and make sure everything is just right for over 100 Warriors, family, and volunteers who enjoy the home-cooked meal on Sunday. Each December SOWW hosts a Christmas party for Warriors and family at Fort. Belvoir where Chef Ken serves a complete lunch including his legendary baked ziti. The baked ziti is so well received that when we return in June for our summer BBQ the Warriors are still talking about it.
Without a doubt Ken’s favorite thing is to be the Visiting Chef on Sunday night preparing unique memorable dishes for the families. He loves to prepare meals for Warriors willing to try wild game. Some of his game dishes include Herb Seasoned Rabbit Meatballs, Black-Eyed Pea Stew with Spicy Buffalo Bratwurst, Mustard and Herb Crusted Wild Boar Crown Roast, and a Grilled Octopus Green Bean Salad. Chef Ken was named Event Chef of the Year in 2016 and 2017. This year he said he will work hard to be named Visiting Chef of the Year.
Thank you Chef Gardner for your dedication to our warriors!
