In December 2006, the pastor of Park Valley Church in Haymarket, Virginia, asked the small group leaders to organize a 40-day community service project. One of these small groups decided to host a “taste-of-home” Christmas celebration for service members undergoing treatment at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. This event ignited a passion in the hearts of the group’s leaders who decided to host additional holiday events at military hospitals throughout the National Capital Area. Serve Our Willing Warriors has continued with this tradition, which is not only the very root of our mission but also the motivating and driving force of our organization.
We have continued in the vein of our Christmas hospital visits by hosting other “taste-of-home” events like summer BBQs at military hospitals throughout the National Capital Region, including Walter Reed National Military Medical Center and Fort Belvoir Community Hospital.
As of December 2016, our volunteers hosted special events of all kinds for more than 5,000 troops and family members providing more than $200,000 in the form of home prepared meals, gifts, and prizes. Most importantly, our volunteers extend their heartfelt gratitude the recovering service members and their families and let them know about the opportunity to come and stay at our Warrior Retreat.
