A Soldier’s Dream Come True
The bond between a pilot and his crew chief is incredibly strong. For Teri Onoda, the desire to honor his comrade, Specialist Jeremy Tomlin, who died in their helicopter crash on April 17th, 2017 propelled him through his recovery. Teri turned to cycling to help him recover from his injuries and he completed the Army Ten-Miler only six months after the crash carrying a cardboard sign that read “NEVER FORGET SPC JEREMY TOMLIN”.
Since then it’s been Teri’s dream to create a bike team in Jeremy’s honor for anyone who wants to ride in honor of Jeremy or anyone they have lost. When Serve Our Willing Warriors found out about Teri’s dream, they set about to make it a reality.
Shortly thereafter, Amazon Web Services signed up to be the presenting sponsor and part of their sponsorship package was to sponsor a team of warrior bike riders. How perfect then, that they sponsor Team Tomlin to include their own jersey.
Thanks to the Warrior Bike Ride and the generous sponsorship of Amazon Web Services, Team Tomlin went from one soldier riding in honor of his friend to 20. Teri said that recruiting the members of this bike team and coordinating everything also helped him with his cognitive recovery. In addition, Teri raised almost $1,600 in PledgeReg sponsorships for Team Tomlin. Jeremy’s family was so touched by Teri’s efforts that they donated the proceeds they earned in a bike ride they held in Jeremy’s honor in their home state of Tennessee to the Warrior Bike Ride.
These two pilots have come a long way in a year and we’re looking forward to them riding with us again next year!
